DEFLECTION ANALYSIS OF RADIALLY CRACKED FLOATING ICE SHEETS
Devinder S. Sodhi, U. S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, Ice Engineering Research Division, 72 Lyme Road, Hanover, New Hampshire 03755-1290, U. S. A.
ABSTRACT
A deflection analysis of radially cracked floating ice sheets by the finite element method is presented. The results of this analysis are used to obtain the elastic energy release rate (or the crack extension force) for radial cracks that form when the maximum stress in an intact ice sheet exceeds the flexural strength of the ice. The elastic energy release rate goes to zero when the radial cracks are about two times the characteristic length of a floating ice sheet. The lengths of the radial cracks obtained from this analysis are in agreement with those observed during full-scale and small-scale experiments.
GLOBAL FIRST-YEAR ICE LOAD MEASUREMENTS IN THE ARCTIC
Denis Blanchet, Amoco Corporation, Houston, Texas, USA
Kurt P. Kennedy, CANMAR, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
ABSTRACT
Global first-year ice load measurement programs successfully carried out to date in arctic and sub-arctic regions are described. Full-scale global first-year icc load measurements have been analyzed and the results compiled into a database. Methods of interpretation and derivation of global ice loads from these field measurements are presented, and simple design ice load derivation models based on full-scale data are proposed.

ABSTRACT
A Joint Industry-Government Project is underway in Canada aimed at better understanding the differences in global design ice load predictions on arctic offshore structures, with the ultimate goal of reaching an international consensus on the subject. The background behind the project, the methodology employed, and the status as of March 1, 1996 are presented.
